Technical Leadership: Defusing the Ticking Time Bomb

Does your company have an expert who wrote much of your customized software? If this person left the company tomorrow would your company be able to continue without missing a beat, or would there be major chaos the first time something went wrong?


I have worked with many companies that have one or more employees, both in IT and in business, who created systems and applications that nobody else understands AND nobody else is learning to understand.


Many reasons are given why nobody else is trained on this.

- It would take too long / I don't have time

- The person to train doesn't have an IT degree

- We have too much other important work

- Nobody else is capable of learning this

- It would take forever

- I'm not going anywhere - why are you trying to take away my work?


We have all heard the phrase, "what if someone gets hit by a bus?" It could be a great new job opportunity, a major illness (think Covid), taking care of family, or even just needing a mental break and your employee is no longer available.


There are many ways to defuse this ticking bomb which can be tailored to the company and the employees.


The solution is not to leave it as, as the countdown slowly moves: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-0.............
